Hard to imagine a more spectacular location, this 14th century inn is just off the coast and can only be reached at low tide, or at high tide with the help of a tractor-on-stilts. It is a truely atmospheric pub, very basic, with food including mussels, minute steak, soups and bagettes at lunchtime. Free house - Sharp's, Teignworthy, St Austell. Elsewhere on the island is a very expensive art deco hotel, once a favourite haunt of Noel Coward and the Windsors, and the setting for several of Agatha Christie's novels.
